Interesting post!  The derivation of names of neighborhoods, towns, and cities is just fascinating.  Developers definitely have a hand in many names.  Peter Kirk hoped to develop what is now Kirkland as the &quot;Pittsburgh&quot; of the Northwest by bringing the train lines up from Tacoma and starting a huge steel mill.  Unfortunately for him, the panic of 1893 got him first and he was unable to move forward with his plans.  The name of the city, Kirkland, still stuck.

I wrote a piece about the derivation of the name of Redmond on one of my eastside blogs:

Sometimes names come from people just getting there first or second and pulling some strings.  Other names come from local industry, such as Concrete, WA. 

 I want to know where Index got its name and then there is a town in Oregon called Drain...?</description>
