US Housing Starts Illustrated: 50 Year Low

Source: United States Census Bureau.

While housing starts – the number of homes on which construction has been started – have gone up and down since 1959, no year has come close to being as low as 2009. While predictions for 2010 are somewhat improved, you can count on fewer new homes being available in 2010 and 2011.

It is such a shame that the real estate market had to get to a point like this. Hopefully if the economy starts to look better it will give a push to the market. Real Estate has lost so much credibility lately something needs to happen for a positive change.

Very interesting statistics. Its a shame there is such a negative connotation around the Real Estate Market right now. Only time will tell I suppose as to how long the market will be in a slump like this. Lets hope it pulls out and through soon.

Sad to see the economy is flopping and we definitely need a positive change in the real estate market.

I think a lot of it also has to do with the perception and fear that people have about the industry. No one wants to sell their homes and instead so many are going into foreclosure trying to “hold on” b/c no one's buying. The fact is people will always be buying, so weather it's your home for sale or your foreclosed property……

This is a pretty shocking illustration. I know in Southern California they have just about occupied every decent stretch of land already. However this is really an unfortunate thing and I hope our “new” president can turn things around!

C'mon America, lets get this country turned around! It all starts with cities, then states, then federal, we need political reform and created opportunities for jobs which leads to housing eventually

Real estate of lately has lost faith from all investors, add to that the financial crisis that has led to downfall of the sales of houses.

Hopefully this financial year looks promising.

I agree. Companies are sitting on cash because either they know something else may come to weaken the economy further such as commercial properties or there is something else they know about that we don't.

The statistics not accurate at all. They are just theories. In fact, everything is being improved gradually with positive trend. But the prices of those keep increasing rapidly.

Very true. I looked up the value of my home and it has decreased to 1.9 million from its original 3.5 million two years ago. I can still probably sell it for the high 2 millions though.
